One of the privileges you have, once you acquire your General class license, is to become a VE (Volunteer Examiner).
When an individual takes their ham test, the test must be monitored (proctored, if you will) by a team of VEs. Each test must be scored and certified by three (3) VEs.
The VE team is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the exam. They provide instruction, verify identification, and ensure all documentation is filled out correctly.
During the exam, the VEs are responsible for making sure the candidates follow the instructions and provide guidance.
To become a VE is fairly straightforward, depending on the VEC (Volunteer Examiner Coordinator). For example, to become a ARRL VE, there is an open book written test which you take and submit to the ARRL VEC. In approximately 5-weeks, you will receive your official certificate and credentials, like the one you see for this article. Other VECs have similar requirements and you may become a VE for more than one (1) VEC. Just contact the VEC you are interested in.
